6 Top Scottish Ice-Cream Flavours
Next time you’re in Scotland, head to one of the many ice-cream parlours or farm shops to discover some delicious (and whacky!) ice cream flavours with a very distinct Scottish flavour.
Here are some of our favourites.
6 top Scottish ice cream flavours
1. Irn Bru
Known as “Scotland’s other national drink”, Irn Bru is a fizzy soft drink you just have to try when you’re north of the border! It’s even better when its unique and bold flavour is used in a sorbet! Head to Jannettas Gelateria in the home of golf, St Andrews, to pick up a waffle cone filled with this truly iconic Scottish favourite. If you fancy a sorbet serving instead which offers a zingier taste closer to that of the bubbly drink, Vanilla Joe’s in Irvine do a fantastic scoop.
2. Scottish Tablet
Tablet is a sweet, melt in the mouth confectionery with Scottish roots going back to the early 18th century – and now it’s a must-have addition to ice-cream! Usually crumbled into a vanilla ice cream, you won’t be disappointed with this magical combination!
3. Whisky, Honey & Oatmeal
There’s nothing more Scottish than this trio of flavours – and you can try it on the farm where it’s produced in Castle Douglas in the borders! It’s just one of the flavours made by Cream O’Galloway, an award-winning Scottish ice-cream maker.
4. Tayberry
Tayberries were first grown in Dundee in the 70s, a delicious cross between a blackberry and raspberry, and named after the nearby River Tay. It’s no wonder this soft fruit, which tastes sweeter than a raspberry, has made its way into ice cream, with parlours in Dundee and St Andrews using this unique ingredient when it’s in season. Jannettas Gelateria in St Andrews was one of the first to create the unique ice cream flavour, which it still sells today.
5. Tunnocks Tea Cake
If you don’t know what a Tunnocks Tea Cake is, then you are definitely missing out! With a biscuit layer and marshmallow topping, all covered in milk chocolate, it’s a sweet treat that has been enjoyed in Scotland for almost 70 years. Stonehaven’s award-winning E. Giulianotti ice-cream makers have their own Tunnocks Tea Cake ice cream, which is just as delicious as it looks!
6. Deep Fried Mars Bar
What started off as a novelty has turned into a world-famous “delicacy”! When a chip shop in Stonehaven first battered and fried a Mars Bar, little did they know how far word would spread! When you’re in Scotland next, look out for this unique ingredient popping up in ice-cream parlours and restaurants – or make it at home, served with vanilla ice cream.
