Take A Hike… To Dumgoyne
The Tenth Scots Magazine “Take A Hike” took place last weekend on and around Dumgoyne, the distinctive hill on the west end of the Campsies.
As usual, there was a good and enthusiastic turn-out and we were fortunate in the dry overhead conditions.
Cameron McNeish was amongst the party and the walk took him back to his childhood days spent exploring these hills not far from his home in Glasgow.
The going was tough to start off with, as the steep slope of Dumgoyne made sure of a fair number of pechs!
Once the hard work was done, however, it was fairly gentle undulating walk to Earls Seat, the highest point in the Campsies.
It got a bit blowy on the summit so it was decided to head back down before stopping for our pieces.
On the way back, nine of the group decided to tackle Dumgoyne itself, while the rest made their way down. Eventually we all joined up again and departed to the Beech Tree Inn for some much needed refreshment.
This pub/restaurant is right on the West Highland Way and can be quite busy. However, proprietor Lynne Alldritt was kind enough to reserve a room for us so we were well set.
There was only one duty left for me as hike organiser: to present a cake to Frank and Liz Longmuir who have faithfully joined us for every single hike!
As always, a collection was put round to raise funds for a chosen charity, and this hike’s nominated cause was to help those living with Cystic Fibrosis in Scotland. Together with a kind donation from the office tuck shop our hikers raised a total of £400.
Join us for out next Take A Hike on July 16 when we’ll be tackling Meall a’ Buachaille by Loch Morlich
