Eilean Donan
Well, it would be rude not to include this one, wouldn’t it?
About as attractive as four walls can ever possibly be, Eilean Donan enjoys an immaculate spot at the meeting points of Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh and has become one of Scotland’s most iconic images.
A traditional home for the Clan Mackenzie, the castle has had a comparatively peaceful military past but was bombarded – briefly but devastatingly – in 1719 as part of the failed Jacobite uprising. It was rebuilt in the 20th Century to what we see today – including a grand interior that makes for a popular wedding venue.
Another one supremely popular on the big screen, Eilean Donan has featured in the likes of Highlander and the Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.
