Twelve Poets comprises a generous gift to the Gallery by New Edinburgh Limited, the development company for business park Edinburgh Park, and features bronze busts of much-loved literary names such as Edwin Morgan, Iain Crichton Smith, Hugh MacDiarmid, Liz Lochhead, Naomi Mitchison and Sorley MacLean, mounted on specially designed plinths mirroring the original set of herms in Edinburgh Park. As a celebration of twentieth-century Scottish poetry and to make art more accessible, Edinburgh Park embarked on a three-year project to install 12 herms within its environment. Each herm is a life-sized casting of a head, mounted on a stone column bearing the poet’s work. The project was completed in July 2004 and Edinburgh Park gifted a second cast of each of the herms to the Gallery. The works were created by contemporary Scottish sculptors Michael Snowden, Anthony Morrow, David Annand, Archie Forrest, Alex Main, Bill Scott and Vincent Butler.
