Tantallon Castle
A favourite for photographers, Tantallon is just barely hanging on to our east coastline.
Peering down over the booming cliffs to the east of North Berwick, the 14th Century ruin glows beautifully on sunny days and glowers menacingly the rest of the time.
Another castle that benefits from distance shots (largely to accommodate imposing Bass Rock in the background), the interior also makes for a fascinating wander.
In an atmospheric state of ruin, Tantallon has seen several sieges in its time as it was once home to the Red Douglases – who tended to jump between allegiances and fight rather a lot. The views from the tower, in all directions, are glorious.
