A-Z of Secret Glasgow: The Lighthouse
For some of the best views of the city, head to The Lighthouse.
This impressive building is in the centre of town – just off the shopping ”Style Mile.”
It was formerly home to The Glasgow Herald newspaper and was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. After lying derelict for many years, it was given a new lease of life in 1999 when it was transformed into Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design.

If you need an escape from the hustle and bustle of Buchanan Street then this peaceful, well-arranged gallery is worth a visit. There are six exhibition spaces on six different floors and they are brimming with art, projects and workshops all year round. If you are a fan of Charles Rennie Mackintosh then this place is a must-see as Level 3 is home to the Mackintosh Centre.
The Lighthouse also has a fantastic gift shop.
After the art appreciation you can burn off all some calories by climbing the 134 steps to the top of Mackintosh tower. You might be exhausted afterwards, but at least you’ll get to treat yourself to a spectacular panoramic rooftop view of the city.
