A-Z of Secret Glasgow: Gandolfi

gandolfi glasgow

If you want to try a true Glasgow institution you absolutely need to head to Café Gandolfi.

Opened in 1979 on the site of an old cheese market in the Merchant City, it’s played a huge part in the renaissance of this once dilapidated and down-at-heel area. Café Gandolfi is a true pioneer – it can even lay claim to being home to the city’s very first cappuccino machine.

With its iconic Lord of the Rings style wooden furniture, stained glass high windows and quirky wall art, it oozes style and charm.

It is definitely the granddaddy of the boho scene.

NEXT: Discover the deliciously dark Hunterian Anatomy Museum.

The food is impressively old-school too. Try the Cullen Skink – it’s legendary, as are their made-to-order breakfasts. Upstairs, squeezed snugly in the attic, is baby brother Bar Gandolfi serving up cool drinks and live music.

Open: Mon – Sat 8.30 am – 11.30pm. Sun – 9 am – 11.30pm.

Address:  Cafe Gandolfi, 64 Albion Street, G1 1NY
